Nurgyul Salimova created quite a stir in the world of chess by performing phenomenally at the Bulgarian Championships 2022. The 20-year-old top player from Bulgaria decided not to play in the women’s section where she would be the top seed, and instead decided to focus her attention in the open section. Starting as the 9th seed in a field that had several GMs, the youngster scored 6.0/9 to clip the runner’s up position.
What stood out even more than the standings were the tremendous games that Salimova played. In this interview with IM Sagar Shah, Nurgyul speaks about her chess career, how she is trying to balance her academics and chess, her feelings about finishing 2nd at such a strong tournament and her future plans!
