After a sparkling performance in 2022, 16-year-old Gukesh faced his first big challenge of the year 2023. His first ever classical super tournament – Tata Steel Masters 2023 at Wijk Aan Zee. Gukesh started off the tournament with some nerves and could only muster up 1.5 points in first 7 rounds with three draws and 4 losses.
However, the boy was not going to let the tournament end on a low for him. In the second half he picked up pace, winning 2 games and drawing 4 to finish with a respectable score of 5.5/13.
In this interview spanning nearly an hour, Gukesh speaks about the critical moments in many of his games, he talks about analyzing for 50 minutes with Magnus Carlsen after the game, how was his experience and playing card games with Ding Liren at the end of the event.
