Two rooks are usually stronger than a queen. But a lot depends on the specifics of the position to make an evaluation. That’s the reason why top GMs like Magnus Carlsen and Anish Giri are so good with such imbalances. They just understand when a specific imbalance is good for them and when it is not. But in the 4th round of the Norway Chess 2022, Magnus Carlsen showed superior understanding of a position when Anish Giri won two rooks for his queen. It seemed like Anish’s position was fine, but in fact Magnus had a decisive advantage after just 16 moves. What happened there? IM Sagar Shah tries to explain it in this video.
