Holder of International Master titles both in chess composition and chess solving, the leading Romanian problemist Vlaicu Crişan wins the ChessBase India Winter Solving Championship, cruising through the event’s finale. The contest that began in November last year and saw the participation of 70+ solvers came down to a thrilling tiebreaker, with only nine battling it out for the top three spots. Vlaicu’s enormous experience was on full display in this last part of the competition, which took into account not just accuracy but also the speed of solving. As he cracked one problem after another, barely feeling the ticking timer, the rest of the contestants struggled to keep up. However, Joachim Hambros, a budding proof game composer, took a clear second place, showing impressive precision in tackling series movers and fairy problems. On the other hand, Sethu Madhav Upadhyayula grabbed the third place, vaulting ahead of Alexandru Mihalcescu and Személyi Sebestyén at the very last minute by cracking the final rebus puzzle correctly.
