Vidit’s preparation against Shirov’s Najdorf sets the board on fire | FIDE Grand Prix

March 2, 2022 by Chess Chest Leave a Comment

Vidit Gujrathi has started off the 2nd leg of the FIDE Grand Prix 2022 with a flourish as he beat Alexei Shirov with the white pieces. Vidit opened the game with 1.e4. He plays that move every now and then, but it is not his main weapon. When his opponent played the Najdorf, Vidit played the fashionable 6.Qd3!? It led to immense complications for which the Indian GM was well prepared. The board was set on fire! But it was clear that only one person could get burnt in that inferno! It was Shirov as Vidit romped to a fine victory.

@ginger_gm @chessable @richardpalliser Good stuff, guys! I had a look at these lines back in 2019 for my Sicilian course as Black. I was surprised to find that this is much better than you might think at first. Leads to good fighting positions and certainly will surprise people!

What is Indian school of chess? How did we get such avalanche of talents in recent times? Here is my take on the subject with @chesscom. It starts with Sultan Khan and ends with Gukesh. Have a look at the first part of this unique series. #Chess #India

Thats a nice checkmate! 😎
This 1 e4 c5 2 Be2 is a very interesting idea, aiming for an ideal Dutch.
It's a nice 'system' opening, meaning knowing the basic plans is the key.
Hopefully I explain them all in the videos!
