India’s 81st and Kolkata, West Bengal’s 11th Grandmaster is Sayantan Das. He told his school principal that this time he will come back with the title and he did in a handsome manner by winning 6th Cannes Chess Open 2023 and then won another event, Chessemy Open 2023.
Everyone who knows him, is aware of his GM-like strength. The GM-title was just a matter of time but the time it took was quite long. He became an International Master back in 2013. Earned all three GM-norms by 2017 but one thing was remaining – crossing 2500 in the live ratings. Over six years later, he crossed 2500 by winning the 6th Cannes Chess Open 2023 on 26th February, to earn the coveted title. Sayantan has won World Under-12 Open in 2008, then he went on to win three National age group titles in a year. He talks about his journey, how he did not have a chess board and played chess with chalk and slateboard with his father and grandfather, his journey in chess, what worked for him, why he was so near to the GM title, yet so far, how he lost his father in 2020 due to cancer, how Metro Railway, Kolkata has been supportive in his chess career, the valuable advice K Sasikiran gave him and a lot more.
