Momentum and the initiative play an enormous role in competitive chess, and particularly so at faster time controls. “Trend-breaking moves” (coined by GM Alex Yermolinsky in his excellent book “The Road to Chess Improvement”) are moves that seek to turn the tide via complications, and you should look for them when your back is against the wall!
