The New York 1889 tournament effectively became the first Candidates tournament as the winner gained the right to challenge World Chess Champion, Wilhelm Steinitz, for his crown. Max Weiss was one of the two winners, but he lost this game, a brilliancy prize victory by Irish Champion, William Pollock.
