The 85th edition of the Tata Steel Masters is a 14-player single round-robin taking place from 14-29 January in Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands. World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen heads a field that includes Ding Liren, Fabiano Caruana and teenage stars Gukesh, Arjun Erigaisi, Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Vincent Keymer and Praggnanandhaa. The time control is 100 minutes for 40 moves, followed by 50 minutes for 20 moves, then 15 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment per move from move 1. A tie for first place will be decided by two blitz (3+2) games. If still tied, the players keep playing single “sudden death” games where White gets 2.5 minutes and Black 3 minutes until one side wins. The monetary prizes will be shared evenly.
