Be careful, or a stalemate might ruin your game! Wait, you don’t know what a stalemate is? Don’t worry, this video is here to help you.
First of all, a stalemate is nothing like a checkmate. When you checkmate your opponent, you can skip with joy and pat yourself in the back because you have just won the game. When you stalemate your opponent, though, you do not get the victory. In fact, the game draws, and you really have to make an effort to not be too upset with yourself.
A stalemate happens when it is a player’s turn to move, their king is not under attack, and they have no legal moves left to make. An unfortunate situation when you are the person with an extra queen or rook, and you had an easy victory ahead of you.
This can only happen because, in chess, you are not allowed to move your king into check.
