If we asked who are the most popular brother sister siblings in Indian chess, one would be quick to answer Praggnanandhaa and Vaishali. But who were the most popular siblings of Indian chess in the 90s? Well, no one would have to think for more than a few seconds to say the Kuntes! It was Abhijit and Mrunalini who were the strongest siblings in Indian chess back then.
In this interview we get to know more about WIM Mrunalini Kunte. She was the national champion of India in 1996 and has represented our country at three Chess Olympiads. She is now a fine chess trainer and heads one of the biggest chess academies in the world – the Kunte Chess Academy. We ask her about her beginnings, how she got stronger, how working with Abhijit helped her and what stopped her from becoming a WGM.
