The role of parents is a very crucial one when you are nurturing a chess prodigy. That’s the reason why IM Sagar Shah spoke to the parents of GM Bharath Subramaniyam, who became India’s 73rd GM at the age of 14 years.
Harishankkar, Bharath’s father is a professional. His wife Yamini was a senior software developer. Bharath’s brother Balasubramanium was also a chess player and reached an Elo of 2300. At some point, Yamini decided to quit her professional career to support the chess career of both her children. While Bala has now quit playing chess actively, Bharath went on to become a GM.
The story of this family is one of sacrifices and courage. We speak with both Harishankkar and Yamini and understand the roadblocks that came between them and their child’s dream of a successful chess career.
