The Excelsior Theme in which a passed pawn races from it’s starting square to a promotion square is usually reserved for chess problems, but in this incredible chess miniature, Mikhail Tal manages to send his g-pawn all the way through to the opposite rank in 18 moves, forcing resignation!
“Any problem that features a pawn moving from its starting square to promotion in the course of the solution is now said to demonstrate the Excelsior theme.” – Wikipedia
Lessons:
* Passed pawns must be created! Then pushed…
* Castle (even in the Sicilian).
