INTERVIEW Magnus Carlsen Is In The Final! | “I’m Very Happy About That”

April 30, 2021 by Chess Chest Leave a Comment

Magnus Carlsen talks to Kaja Snare, GM David Howell, and IM Jovanka Houska about the semifinal results on the 7th day of the New in Chess Classic, the 5th event on the $1.5 million Meltwater Champions Chess Tour!

After two wins in a row against Levon Aronian, Magnus Carlsen now proceeds to the finals. Carlsen says: “I’m in the final, I’m very happy about that, and I don’t take it for granted after what’s happened in the Tour!”

It’s going to be a Carlsen-Nakamura final after Hikaru Nakamura beat Shakhriyar Mamedyarov in Armageddon, after previously drawing two blitz games!

Hikaru Nakamura had to come back from losing the rapid mini-match 3:0 to win in Armageddon.

The New in Chess Classic tournament is held from April 24th to May 2nd, 2021. The players taking part in this tournament are: current World Champion Magnus Carlsen, Wesley So, Levon Aronian, Sergey Karjakin, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, Alireza Firouzja, Hikaru Nakamura, Teimour Radjabov, Vidit Gujrathi, Lenier Dominguez, Le Quang Liem, Jan Kryzsztof Duda, Aryan Tari, Gawain Jones, Johan Sebastien Christiansen and R. Praggnanandhaa.

The 3-day preliminary stage sees the 16 players play each other once before the bottom 8 are eliminated while the top 8 advance to a knockout consisting of 2-day, four game rapid matches. In the event of a tie on the second day, the match advances to to blitz (5|3) and armageddon (White has five minutes, Black four with no increment) tiebreaks.

@ginger_gm @chessable @richardpalliser Good stuff, guys! I had a look at these lines back in 2019 for my Sicilian course as Black. I was surprised to find that this is much better than you might think at first. Leads to good fighting positions and certainly will surprise people!

What is Indian school of chess? How did we get such avalanche of talents in recent times? Here is my take on the subject with @chesscom. It starts with Sultan Khan and ends with Gukesh. Have a look at the first part of this unique series. #Chess #India

Thats a nice checkmate! 😎
This 1 e4 c5 2 Be2 is a very interesting idea, aiming for an ideal Dutch.
It's a nice 'system' opening, meaning knowing the basic plans is the key.
Hopefully I explain them all in the videos!

“Unlike other games in which lucre is the end and aim, [chess] recommends itself to the wise by the fact that its mimic battles are fought for no prize but honor. It is eminently and emphatically the philosopher’s game.”
