Vinay Bhat has parents of Indian origin but he was born and brought up in the US. He was one of the best talents in the country and became the youngest national master of the US at the age of just 10 years and a few months. However, life took interesting turns for him as he plateaued at 2200 level for some time. He pushed himself to become an IM at the age of 16 but once again academics came between him and his goal of becoming a strong player.
Chess came back as a priority in his life at some point and he pumped up his Elo to 2550 as well as hitting the GM title at the age of 24. In this book on How I became a Grandmaster, Vinay Bhat outlines his entire chess career, how he navigated through the lows, learnt from them and kept getting better. If you are an ambitious player, you have a lot to gain from Vinay honestly narrating his story and the way in which he improved.
In this interview IM Sagar Shah sits down with Vinay to know more about his life and why he wrote this book. They also look at two games – one against Granda Zuniga and the other with GM Piotr Bobras.
