Ketan Khaire is a strong chess player. He was the state champion of Maharashtra in the year 1995 and has had the highest FIDE Elo of 2222. He has his own chess academy Kala Krida Prabodhini and is also an interior designer lecturer at the famous Ferguson college in Pune.
When Indian Oil launched its program called Parivartan which involved teaching chess in prisons, GM Abhijit Kunte approached Ketan to teach chess to the inmates of the Yerwada prison in Pune. Taking it as an opportunity for self-growth Ketan accepted the offer.
From November 2021 he went to the prison regularly to teach more than 20 inmates the basics of chess. In a year this culminated into the Yerwada Prison winning the national championships held between the 21 prisons of India and also qualify for the Inter-Continental Prison Championships 2022. The Yerwada prison from India participated along with 43 countries and India won the bronze medal in this online competition organized by FIDE and the Cook County (Chicago) Sheriff.
We speak to Ketan about his experience of teaching chess to the prison inmates and how chess can prove to be a potent tool to bring about a change in the society.
