Playing chess, we always hear about grandmasters. But do you know what that word really means?
Grandmaster is a title given out by FIDE, the International Chess Federation. It is the highest possible title a chess player can achieve, which means that only the best among the best have it.
Other FIDE titles include the candidate master, FIDE master, and international master. FIDE also has titles exclusive to women: woman candidate master, woman FIDE master, woman international master, and woman grandmaster.
To become a grandmaster, a player has to achieve an international rating of at least 2500 points. They also have to have a fantastic performance in three different international tournaments. No wonder there are fewer than 2000 grandmasters in the entire world. The good news is that once you achieve any of the titles above, you keep them for your whole life. Pretty cool, isn’t it?
