FIDE is part of the reason why chess is so exciting. But do you know what it is?
FIDE is the International Chess Federation, an organization that officially takes care of every chess-related subject worldwide. The name FIDE comes from Fédération Internationale des Échecs. They have been doing this important job since 1924, which means that they are probably older than your grandparents!
But why do we think that they help to make chess exciting? Well, for starters, they are the ones who make it possible for chess to have a World Champion. They organize the world championship and all the other tournaments that lead to it.
FIDE is also the organization that organizes the Chess Olympiad, where great chess players worldwide face each other.
It is also thanks to FIDE that we can correctly rate players according to their performance. Without them, every organization would have a different rating for a player, and no one would know how strong a player was.
Finally, they are also the ones who organize all the official international championships for kids like you!
