How do you become a better chess player and learn how to say an Italian word at the same time? By watching this video about the fianchetto, of course!
Fianchetto is an Italian word that means “little flank.” Chess players use that word to talk about a bishop developed to the “long diagonal.” Specifically, those fianchettoed bishops are developed to b2 and g2 for White and b7 and g7 for Black.
A fianchettoed bishop can be a strong piece because it attacks the center from a distance. They are usually surrounded by pawns and many times protected by the king after the player castles.
Watch this video by FunMasterMike, where he goes over this important chess concept and why fianchettoed bishops can be so powerful!
