Do you want to win more games of chess? If you do, delivering checkmate should be your top priority!
The word checkmate comes from the Persian expression “Shâh-mât,” which loosely translates to “the king is helpless” or “the king is dead.” Chess players use this word to identify the situation when a king is under attack and cannot avoid being “taken” in the next turn. Whenever that happens, the player who delivered the checkmate wins the game.
But how do you identify a checkmated king? Well, it is easy if you know how to do CPR. But if you have skipped Health class or if you still have not gotten there yet, don’t worry. We are talking about a different kind of CPR.
Doing CPR to a chess king means Capturing the piece attacking your ruler, Protecting it with one of your own pieces, or Running away. If you can’t do CPR to an attacked king, then the king is in checkmate.
