Ding Liren has to play 26 FIDE rated games in order to reach the threshold of 30 games before the end of 30th of April 2022. That’s because if he wants to make it to the Candidates, the minimum requirement is 30 rated games and Ding has only played 4 till date.
How did Ding Liren get this chance? Well it’s because of Karjakin’s political stance on the Russia Ukraine war crisis. FIDE’s ethics and disciplinary commission has banned him from all FIDE competitions for a period of six months. Which means that Sergey cannot take part in the Candidates 2022, and a new spot has opened up – the highest rated player as on 1st of May 2022 provided he has played in 30 rated games in the last year.
Ding is playing now at the HangZhou GM chess tournament in China where he takes on three other players in a quadruple round robin event. Currently Ding is on 5.5/6 and seems to be cruising towards the Candidates qualification spot. In this video IM Sagar Shah gives you a position to solve and your task is to guess Ding Liren’s correct moves.
