The move 4. Bd3 is a strong move against the Owens Defense because it attacks the d5-square, which is a crucial point in this opening. By attacking this square, White puts pressure on Black’s position and gains control of the center of the board. This move also prepares for the possible future development of White’s knight to the d2-square, where it can support a pawn push to d4 and exert even more control over the center. Additionally, 4. Bd3 sets the stage for White to fianchetto their bishop to the g2-square, where it can exert strong pressure along the long diagonal. Overall, 4. Bd3 is a strong move that gives White a solid foothold in the center of the board and sets the stage for further attacks on Black’s position.
