It was the final round of the Qatar Masters 2023. Arjun Erigaisi has half a point lead over the field. He comes to the game facing the top Uzbek player Nodirbek Abdusattorov. A draw would ensure Arjun at least joint first at this prestigious event. And so the game begins!
Abdusattorov has done his homework. In fact the Uzbek GM is so well prepared that Arjun is left gasping for air. After just 20 moves Arjun is left with 20 minutes on the clock while Abdusattorov has a solid 1 hour lead. While many would crumble under such pressure, Arjun found one good move after another.
And before you knew it, the 20-year-old Wonder from Warangal was out of the woods and was cruising towards a draw. In fact the draw was quite trivial for a player of Arjun’s calibre. And then the unthinkable happened
