Gukesh beating Fabiano Caruana at the Chess Olympiad 2022 was a big news! Not only because Caruana is a former World Championship Challenger and world no.2 but also because Gukesh was just 16 years old when he achieved this feat. Was this the first time ever that something like this happened in India chess? Actually, no! The first time such an upset occurred was back in 1982, 40 years ago when a young 16-year-old Dibyendu Barua beat Viktor Korchnoi, the then world no.2 at the Lloyds Bank tournament.
