Vidit Gujrathi scored one of the biggest victories of his chess career as he downed the 2-time FIDE World Championship Challenger Ian Nepomniachtchi in the 5th round of the FIDE World Cup 2023. The two classical games had ended in a draw. So the match went into tiebreaks. Both the 25+10 segments were drawn and then Vidit showed his real class in the 10+10 section where he scored two powerful back to back wins. With a score of 4-2 Vidit managed to knockout Nepo and book himself a quarterfinal spot. This is the second time that Vidit has managed to reach the Quarter Finals of the World Cup. In this interview we speak to Vidit about his games, his thoughts on four Indians reaching the Quarter Finals, what he thinks about his next round opponent Nijat Abasov and what is his secret to remaining calm in stressful moments.
