In-between moves – also known as zwischenzugs, intermezzos, or intermediate moves – are moves where one side responds to an attack or capture with an unexpected counterattack, capture, or check. The second player may be hoping to profit from this “sequence interrupting” decision, but the tactical volatility these types of moves introduce can be quite high! As such, you should use in-between moves sparingly and calculate the ramifications of them thoroughly should you decide to use them (likewise, pause and calculate more than usual if your opponent plays an in-between move on you). In this 2009 Indian Championship game between IM Jha Sriram and GM Rajaram Laxman (from the excellent book “Mastering Chess Strategy” by GM Johan Hellsten), Black’s in-between move 17…Bxf3 plunged the game into complications.
