GM Magnus Carlsen (NOR, 2864) played his last game as the world champion at the Chess Olympiad in Round 10 against 19-year-old IM Ivan Schitco (MDA, 2490). Ivan had already become a GM, only formality for the confirmation was remaining which was visible on 1st September 2022 FIDE Rating list. Norway had a very disappointing performance considering they were the third seed and finished at 59th place. They lost the penultimate round match to Moldova 1.5-2.5. Even if Carlsen plays in the next edition of 45th Chess Olympiad 2024 at Budapest, Hungary, he will not be playing as the reigning World Champion. Moreover, he might choose not to play as his teammates let him down in this edition. This was Magnus’ seventh Olympiad appearance, third as a world champion, after a gap of six years. Who knows when and where the next one will be.
