GM Ivan Sokolov is well-known to take on challenging projects as a trainer. He began his work with the young Iranian team when Maghsoodloo, Firouzja, Tabatabaei were all talented IMs in their 2400s. Two years after he left all of them had cracked the 2600 mark! This year in 2022 he turned his attention to the Uzbekistan team. The Uzbek team, like Iran, was also very young – Nodirbek Abdusattarov (2688, 17 years), Nodirbek Yakubboev (2620, 20 years), Javokhir Sindarov (2629, 16 years), Jakhongir Vakhidov (2564, 27 years) and Vokhidov Shamsiddin (2552, 20 years).
The Uzbekistan team were seeded 14th in the tournament. Even if the team was young and under-rated, there were surely 8-9 teams who were stronger than them. How did it so happen that the team surpassed all expectations and clinched the gold? What was the role of Ivan Sokolov? How much time did he spend with the team? What were his training techniques? All of this and much more in this hour long interview by IM Sagar Shah with Ivan Sokolov. We also get to know about the strucutre of Uzbekistan chess, the government involvement and last but not the least, we also ask him his opinion on the young Indian talents and what he thinks about them.
